Spoonly was born out of Rachel’s lived experience and her determination to create something different. Her journey, while deeply personal, reflects the experiences of far too many. The struggle with misdiagnosis, overlooked symptoms, and the resulting emotional and physical toll compelled Rachel to transform her pain into purpose. Rachel’s Story

I Knew Something Was Wrong

For months, I was sick. I felt exhausted all the time. I was cold no matter how many layers I wore. My voice grew hoarse, my breathing became tight, and a strange pressure built in my neck. I knew something was wrong, but no one could tell me what. I saw several different doctors, and each visit followed the same pattern. When they couldn’t figure out the cause of my symptoms, their questions shifted to my personal life. At the time I was going through a divorce, and as soon as they heard that, their faces lit up.

“That explains it. This isn’t medical. It’s emotional. You’re grieving. It’s stress.”

I was brushed off again and again as my body fell further into crisis. One doctor even wrote in my chart that I was experiencing “mild discomfort” when I had told them I could barely lift my head.

The Diagnosis that Changed Everything

One day, I collapsed trying to walk up a flight of stairs. I was rushed to the emergency room, and finally, my providers started to take me seriously. A CT scan revealed tumors in my neck. A biopsy confirmed it was cancer. By then, I had lost time, trust, and a piece of my sense of safety in the world.

I spent the years that followed navigating not just illness, but medical trauma, financial ruin, isolation, fear, and shame.

What I Needed but Couldn’t Find

I often reflect on what I needed most during that time. It wasn’t just answers from doctors. I needed mental health care and integrative support services that truly understood the trauma of medical dismissal and the grief of chronic illness. I needed support that could hold not only my pain and fear, but also the spiritual, emotional, and energetic unraveling that came with fighting for my life.

There was no single place to turn. The resources I needed were scattered, expensive, and often inaccessible. I didn’t have the strength to search. I didn’t have the energy to piece together care from fragmented systems.

Creating a Better Kind of Care

Processing that trauma, and seeing with painful clarity what I so desperately needed but didn’t have, became the soul of what I’m building now.

Spoonly exists because I’m determined to make the world a safer, more gentle, and more supportive place for all people, especially for those living with chronic illness, often at the most vulnerable time in their lives.
